PATENT PROTECTIONS FOR SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGY IN
TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH AND PERSONALIZED MEDICINE
GRANTED TO IO INFORMATICS
BERKELEY, CA - January 12,
2010
IO Informatics has been granted further patent
protection on its intellectual property (IP) portfolio
- strengthening their unique position for semantic
technologies applied to Life Sciences research,
translational research and personalized medicine. The
newly awarded patent protections will make a dramatic
impact in the manner in which complex biological
processes are tackled.
Nineteen claims were allowed in June of 2009. This
new patent extends the company’s “System,
method, software architecture…” patent
granted in 2006, with a priority date of December 1999.
The new semantically focused claims primarily cover
mapping of data subsets to semantic data models (e.g.
“ontologies”) and the representation of
properties and relationships according to common
vocabularies. This serves to maximize the value of data
by integrating and conceptualizing new and existing
data for better comprehension and for new
knowledge-based applications made possible by the
semantic data model.
Dr. Erich Gombocz, VP and CSO of IO Informatics
said, “It is very exciting to see the unique
intellectual advantages our technology offers to
address challenging scientific use-cases effectively
acknowledged by the USPTO. Specifically, advances IO
Informatics has made in the area of applied knowledge
will provide semantic models for profiling drug
toxicity or efficacy, screening and detection of
presymptomatic disease states, patient stratification
for clinical trials, and treatment in personalized
medicine. Being able to do this with confidence will
improve the quality of life through better-targeted,
more efficient medical treatments. It is extremely
rewarding to see this becoming reality.”
These claims define significant enhancements for the
automatic generation of semantic networks from
multi-modal data sources, including binary and image
data.
Robert Stanley, President and CEO of IO Informatics
added, “We are at a very exciting time for
intellectual property at IO informatics. In addition to
the aforementioned patent, the IP portfolio has been
broadened, with 15 new Applied Semantic Knowledgebase
(ASK) application-focused claims filed in August 2009
and with 7 previously filed claims dealing with
protocols for virtual databases and a knowledge
extraction engine in advanced office actions
stages.”
